Ford to Make Cars From Soy.

As part of their effort to make a more eco-friendly car, the Ford Motor Company has announced that they hope to begin making car parts from soy.

For now, Ford is only making gaskets from soy but they hope to expand to other parts of the car soon. The soy gaskets are made from a combination of recycled tires, soy, and new material. The innovation has led to the recycling of 2.2 million pounds of rubber and over 150,000 pounds of soy used in place of new material. Ford claims the soy products are extremely durable and helps reduce the overall weight of the vehicle which increases fuel efficiency. 

Using soy beans in the production of cars may seem radical but Henry Ford himself experimented with the idea back in the 30s and 40s and even produced a “soybean car” prototype in 1941. The frame of the vehicle was metal but the body was a hard plastic made from soybeans and formaldehyde. 

This sounds kinda cool. Imagine how awesomely vegan you would be if even your car was made of soybeans.
