Contraband Bologna Seized at Border.

Mexican border agents seized 400-pounds of illegal contraband bologna at the United States’ southern border.

Agents say a Mexican citizen was attempting to smuggle 35 giant rolls of the deli meat into the US by hiding it in the space behind his pick-up seats. It is illegal to bring unchecked meat into the country because of the high risk of spreading deadly diseases. The smuggler was given a $1,000 fine and released.

Illegally smuggled meat, even small amounts, can lead to expensive and dangerous breakouts of disease. In the UK, smuggled meat led to over 40,000 animals being slaughtered for foot and mouth infection with nearly 700 people stricken. Foot and mouth disease, possibly from imported meat, caused the Korean government to bury millions of animals alive earlier this year.

The US government is pretty worried about drugs coming over the border but it seems they should care just as much about contraband bologna.
