Egyptian Revolution Good For Animals.

Dogs are always down for a good revolution.
The revolution in Egypt is stunning. Protesters fill the streets everyday to stand up to a government that has limited democracy in the country for 30 years. The people of Egypt will be better off without President Mubarak’s regime and so will the many animals that have suffered at the hands of an unforgiving and corrupt leadership.
In 2007 the Mubarak ordered the slaughter of close to 4,652 stray dogs in two months. Dogs were gunned down in the streets, full of fear and running for their lives. The pictures that came out showed bloody and injured dogs crawling through the streets trying to hide from the gunmen.
Not only was the Egyptian government responsible for mass dog shootings, they also had cats in their sights. The Mubarak government distributed tons of poison intended to kill strays. The poison had many unintended victims and in 2007 the US ambassador’s dog died a painful and slow death after consuming some on accident.
The Egyptian government had no respect for the lives of their citizens and even less respect for the lives of the animals that inhabit the country. I hope that future leaders will understand the importance of and value of animals and take steps to make a more compassionate country going forward.
