Friday Vegan Spotlight: Coretta Scott-King
Coretta Scott-King knew that the welfare of animals was directly related to social justice and peace and that’s why Coretta was a dedicated animal rights advocate and vegan.
Coretta shows that veganism is interconnected with all other struggles against oppression. Animals are killed for food and clothing. They are made to dance and perform in circuses and movies and television. Vegans and vegetarians are ridiculed and excluded for not eating animals. Coretta believed to kill an animal for no other reason than your taste or fashion preference is to exercise a dangerous lack of compassion.
Friend and comedian Dick Gregory inspired Coretta and her son Dexter to become vegan. He wrote in his book Callus on My Soul:
“I felt the commandment ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ applied to human beings not only in their dealings with each other—war, lynching, assassination, murder and the like—but in their practice of killing animals for food and sport. Animals and humans suffer and die alike. Violence causes the same pain, the same spilling of blood, the same stench of death, the same arrogant, cruel and brutal taking of life.”
Peace starts on your plate. Remember Coretta, see the connection, admit that something has to change.
