New USDA Recommendations Kinda Pro-Veg.
For all the crap USDA has been getting (and deserving), their newly released dietary recommendations are the most pro-veg that we have ever seen.  Check out the section about vegetarianism: “Compared to non-vegetarian eating patterns, vegetarian-style eating patterns have been associated with improved health outcomes—lower levels of obesity, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and...

Meat Eaters Secretly Wish They Were Vegan.
Every so often I hear comments (or NPR articles) that suggest that vegans and vegetarians secretly want to eat meat.  As though people who have dedicated themselves to the reduced suffering of other beings crave the taste of flesh covered in wing sauce or thinly sliced and fried.  Whenever I hear defensive meat eaters make these claims I have to wonder, “maybe it’s meat eaters who...

12,000 Baby Chicks Die in Factory Fire.
A factory farm in Georgia burned to the ground last week killing 12,000 baby chicks. The factory took a big hit financially but sadly they expect to recover. A gruesome death for the little chicks but not worse than what they would have suffered if they lived to become processed chicken mash. Stop eating chicken meat and eggs and you stop paying for chicks like these to be in places like this.

Egyptian Revolution Good For Animals.
Dogs are always down for a good revolution. The revolution in Egypt is stunning.  Protesters fill the streets everyday to stand up to a government that has limited democracy in the country for 30 years.  The people of Egypt will be better off without President Mubarak’s regime and so will the many animals that have suffered at the hands of an unforgiving and corrupt leadership. In 2007...

The show about the experience, along with interviews with authors Kathy Freston and Michael Pollan, airs February 1st and looks like it will be great!  The show will also includes a look behind the scenes at the factory farm industry.  Oprah herself claims that even if you eat meat, this is...

Animals Fed Antibiotics Spread Superbugs.
And you though the swine flu was bad. Feeding incredible amounts of antibiotics to animals on factory farms is creating drug resistant strains of once curable diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.  The USDA and CDC say the super diseases are a “serious emerging concern.”   Pigs, cows, and chickens on factory farms were fed over 35 million pounds of antibiotics in 2010 and more...

America's Favorite Dog Breed.
An ignorant article from MSNBC covers the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) statistics on dog breed popularity in America.  Because the article is about AKC dogs, it entirely omits any mention of the popularity of the mutt. All dogs are great, amazing, and loyal friends (even to the point that it can break your heart) but breeding dogs to fit a certain standard pointless and...

Is Taco Bell "Beef" 64% Vegan?
Taco Bell is under the warming lamp today.  The fast-food giant is facing a lawsuit for false advertising real “beef” products.  Recent tests proved the barely 36% of their “beef” is actual meat.  This leads many to wonder, is Taco Bell “beef” 64% vegan. Along with all their other duties, the USDA also sets regulations on what is considers “beef taco...

Betty White Loves Animals More Than People.
In a recent interview with Barbara Walters and the crew on The View, Betty White revealed her true passion for animals.   When asked if she remembered once saying that she liked animals more than people she responded: “That’s true.  I don’t make it a secret.  They never lie to you.  You know that when they tell you something, they mean it.  They just love you,...

Utah Bill: Feral Animals Can Be Killed.
A proposed bill in Utah is taking a some serious heat from animal advocates and reasonable people alike.  H.B. 210 (sponsored by Republican Curt Oda) would legalize the killing of any animal believed to be “loose” or a “pest.” Under the law, an average citizen can legally club, decapitate, or shoot dogs, cats, pigeons, rodents, or other “pests” if the killer...

US Ban on Haggis Imports Challenged.
Looks like it did in So I Married an Axe Murderer. Scotland is trying to get the US government to overturn a 20 year-old ban on imported haggis.  An import ban on lamb and beef was put in place in 1989 during a massive mad cow outbreak.  Another barrier the Scottish face, the 1971 ban on food products made from lungs. Haggis is made from grinding up hearts, lungs, livers, and stuffing them...

Rooster Forced to Fight Slits Throat.
Police in India are looking for a rooster accused of killing his handler.  After being forced into the ring to fight other roosters to the death, the bird got so mad he turned aroud a slit the jugular vein of the cruel handler.  The man bled out and died shortly after. A friend of the deceased said: “[the handler] tried to push him back into the ring several times.  This upset him and...

USDA Admits to Mass Animal Poisoning.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken blame for the recent death of 200 starlings in South Dakota.  Once thought to be caused by severe cold, the USDA admitted to poisoning the birds because the were pooping on feed at a nearby feedlot.  The USDA used bait laced with a poison called DRC-1339.  Official reports about the poison reveal that after ingestion, birds could...

Justin Bieber Says Adopt, Don't Buy.
Can this kid get any sweeter? The teen heartthrob Justin Bieber posed for PETA’s latest ad promoting adoption of animals from shelters. Around 4 million animals are killed in shelters every year because of the demand of “new” dogs purchased from breeders. Breeders kill shelter dogs’ chances. How can you not love the biebs after this?

Madonna Too Vegan for Piers Morgan and CNN.
When you think of witty put-downs and jabs from dashing Brits you probably think of Morrissey or Ricky Gervais but talk show host Piers Morgan is struggling to be in their league.  Discussing who he intended to bring on as guests for his new CNN show, Piers said he banned Madonna from the show for being “too vegan.”  I’m not sure if he was trying to be funny or if he...

Bread Not Circuses.
A lone protester says baguettes not bullhooks. In Tunisia, riots fueled by economic hardship and starvation are being aggravated as the circus comes to town.  Riot police, some in tanks, have been stationed outside the Belluci Circus for protection of the patrons.  The starving people of Tunisia would rather see their children fed then have the circus come to town. Stop spending tax dollars to...

China Bans Animal Circuses.
A new animal welfare law in China has banned animal circuses and put stronger regulations on circus’ zoo functions.  In China, animals are forced to perform bizarre entertainment acts at zoos essentially making them a circus.   After some disturbing news last week about seal meat being sold in China, I was beginning to think that it was going to be a long time before animal rights even...

Junk Food You Didn't Know Was Vegan.
It’s time to get rid of the myth that vegans are all picky, anal, annoying, and 100% healthy eaters.  We don’t all grow our own mung beans and make organic cashew cheese.  Lots of us (myself in particular) love the greasy/kinda bad for you junk foods.  The great thing about being vegan though is that even the junk food is not nearly as bad for you and non-vegan junk food...

Alicia Silverstone is Pregnant!
Alicia Silverstone, vegan actress and author of the super awesome book The Kind Diet, is pregnant.  Alicia has always been a strong defender of the vegan and raw diets and is one of the most vocal authors in support of a vegan pregnancy.  A controversial subject in the eyes of people who view a life without meat to be a punishment and refusing to give meat to a kid to be child abuse. Alicia is...

Men Like Bedbugs More Than Fur.
Forgive the the bugs, for they know not what they do.  Fur hags on the other hand…. A new Glamour Magazine poll finds that men would rather be with a woman who has bedbugs then one who wears fur! I would have to agree here.  As a man myself, you can always get rid of bedbugs but changing the mind of someone who wears fur can be kind of difficult.   What did men say is their favorite...

Worst Meat Tattoos Ever.
Now I can’t go after the meat tattoo people too much because there are a ton of really sad and awful vegan tattoos out there too.  I think you’ll see if you compare the two, these ones are far worse.  Which one is your favorite?                       That’s it.  I’m shaving my head and getting meat curtains tattooed.

Hunters Contract Virus From Killing Deer.
In more virus news, two hunters have contracted a virus from hunting and butchering deer.  The two hunters, unrelated to one another and living in different states, both developed purple lesions on their fingers shortly after butchering the slaughtered deer.  The nasty sores lasted about two painful months before they went away.  Doctors and scientists were baffled and say that there is no way...

Pay Your Taxes or We'll Kill Your Dog.
A Swiss village was tight on funds so their tax man was doing a little research when he discovered that since 1904 the government had the right to charge a $50 dog tax for which the punishment for not paying is death!  The village fully intends to aggressively pursue folks with back dog taxes. The government of the village has reserved the right to execute any dog who’s owner does not...

Virus Could Wipe Out Cricket Industry.
Hey Bill, what did you say about a virus? This story is all kinds of f*cked up.  A virus that kills crickets is wiping out millions of the little guys on breeding farms.  Unless you’re a reptile owner or a weirdo (sometimes you’re both), you probably didn’t even know cricket breeding farms existed until just now.  The virus has killed millions of crickets so...

Subway Tests Falafel Sandwiches.
O M G.  I really wished I lived in Chicago right now.  Looks like Subway has started testing out veggie falafel sandwiches all across the Chicago Land area.  If they are popular they might go National.  Probably won’t be the best falafel in the world but at least it will be one more option at Subway. If you’re in Chicago, go try this out and let me know what you think.

Ugg Boots Breed Agressive Foot Fungus.
This lamb thinks your fungus is funny.
